At Taman Pertanian Malaysia (Shah Alam) a magnificent dipterocarp tree was bearing a few red winged nuts in Jan 2014.
Location:

I identified the tree as
Dipterocarpus crinitus due to the large stipules and abundance of long hairs.
http://www.asianplant.net/Dipterocarpaceae/Dipterocarpus_crinitus.htm The local name is "keruing mempalas" or "keruing bulu" but the latter refers sometime to
Dipterocarpus baudii.
This species is considered as endangered according to IUCN:
http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/33476/0
40 fallen nuts that were not eaten by insects were collected along the concrete path and kept moist during one week. Only one nut germinated.
The germination was planted in a small polybag with topsoil and kept under 50% shade. The sapling is growing slowly and has less than 20 cm 6 months after the collection of the nut. As with some other dipterocarpaceae, it might be that
Dipterocarpus crinitus has probably phases of slow growth alternated with phases of fast growth. Further observation is needed.
Even small, this seedling is actually the most beautiful I have. The new leaves are hold within pink stipules. I need to find a nice place to plant this baby
Hi,
I am not a specialist. I got my information from: Symington's Forester's Manual of Dipterocarps sold at FRIM.
STIPULES
D. baudii
Elongating to 15 cm frequently tinged red, furnished with tufts of long hairs
D. crinitus
Enlarging up to 5 x 2.5 cm, boat shaped, smooth or covered with tufts of long golden deciduous hair on the outside, often tinged pink when fresh.
LEAVES
D. baudii
Broadly elliptic or ovate-lanceolate, sometime concave, acuminate usually about 22x11 cm, about 18-nerved with dense golden brown, fely-like tomentum on the under surface, margin wavy and fringed with hairs, petioles about 4 cm long, vlothed with long, soft hairs similar to those on the twigs.
D. crinitus
Usually elliptic ovate or ovate, blunt or acute at the apex, about 9x5 cm, rather harshly hairy on both surfaces ( deciduosly on the upper) petioles about 2.5 cm long.
FRUITS
D. baudii
Calyx tube globose, to 2cm across, sparsely golden hairy, wings 18 x3 cm with one conspicuous main nerve and two lateral nerves in the lower half; shorter lobes like rounded ears to about 2cm long.
D. crinitus
Calyx tube smooth ovate-oblong, pointed at the base, about 1.8 cm long; wings about 8x15 cm, glabrous, red-brown when ripe, with one main nerve usually distinctly more prominent than the lateral nerves; lobes short and rounded.
5cm for the stipules and oblong calyx with short lobes made me deciding for D. crinitus. What would be your diagnostic?
